Recycled Paper Bead Jewelry Artisan Story:
Mrs.Sokhun Houn is an inspirational woman. She is 55 years old and was born in Tram Kna district, Takeo province. She was forced to leave her home and move to a different province by notorious Khmer Rouge regime. Eventually she came to live in the dump area on the outskirts of Phnom Penh city. She does not know how to read and write, she knows only how to speak Cambodian.
She has 5 sons and 2 daughters. Her first son finished grade 9. He is now married
with a son. Three of the others finished high school and all the other children are still at school.
She lives in the dump area and picks up discarded things which she then recycles into products she sells. This is her way of earning an income to support herself and her children. She learned how to make recycled paper bead jewelry. The lessons were held a long way from her house and every day she would walk there until she knew how to make bead jewelry. It took her about two months to learn how to make the recycled paper bead jewelry, picture frames, dust bins, hats, bags and more.
Her husband worked as a security guard and when he had free time he also worked as motorbike taxi driver. The times when he was able to come back home, he helped his wife with the work and takes care of all his children. He has been now promoted and is an administrator for a local NGO. Because of her hard work and great
devotion to her children all of her children have been able to go to school. The
sale of her crafts has added to her life pleasure, decency and a chance for
her kids to gain an education and careers.
